The first ever Labor Day parade happened right here in New York City in 1882. As the most populous city of the United States, where many labor movements took place, it’s fitting that this city was the first to celebrate the holiday. However, this year’s Labor Day is almost as historic as the first one. The unemployment rate in the US reached an all-time high just four months ago, and where Americans would normally be attending parades or barbecues, instead, they’re sitting in socially-distanced offices or at home with their laptops for company. Nevertheless, just as New Yorkers celebrated their hard work in 1882, they will celebrate their perseverance in 2020.
