Rihanna unites with Haas Brothers to create limited editions of her new photography book

While fans patiently wait for a new album, the multi-faceted and ever-present singer Rihanna announced a visual autobiography. After a successful launch in New York City’s Guggenheim Museum on October 11th, fans of the artist are being offered access to over 1,000 intimate photos of the famous singer’s life in the span of 504 pages. The coffee-table-book, surely a compelling buy for many despite its $150 price tag, will be released by New York’s very own Phaidon Press on October 24th.

That’s not all. The book, appropriately and simply titled Rihanna, is being released alongside three separate special editions that range from $175 to $75,000 – the latter, paired with a 2,000-pound stone pedestal specially designed by twin brothers Simon and Nikolai Haas, is already sold out, according to various sources. The Luxury Supreme and Fenty x Phaidon editions, however, remain on the market.

The book, “special” edition or not, is filled with the same images ranging from never before seen photos of Rihanna’s childhood in Barbados to her professional life on tour or as a designer.

Winning photos released for The Natural History Museum’s yearly wildlife photography competition

Every year, The Natural History Museum opens up a link for the largest wildlife photography competition in the world. Photographers around the globe are encouraged to submit their work and be considered for the grand title, “Wildlife Photographer of the Year.”

This year, Yongqing Bao, a director and chief ecological photographer for a conservation association in China, wins the 2019 title for his photo of a Himalayan marmot being hunted by a hungry Tibetan fox. The determination of the fox is perfectly expressed at the same time as the panic of the marmot, illustrating a brief moment in the circle of life.

Alongside Bao, 14-year old Cruz Erdmann of New Zealand wins the 2019 title of “Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year.” Exploring the waters of Indonesia since he started diving at the age of 10, Erdmann’s photo showcases, in excruciating detail, a bigfin reef squid that appeared in the darkness of the night.

As for the remaining photographers who were selected for various other titles and prizes, their work can be seen on the museum’s website under the “Gallery” tab on the navigation bar.

Submissions for the 2020 competition are being accepted until December 12th.

Female in Focus exhibition opening at United Photo Industries

For one month only, from October 22nd to November 22nd, Brooklyn’s very own United Photo Industries Gallery is housing the winning photos of various female artists as part of 1854 Media’s objective to provide an award exclusively for women photographers. In collaboration with the British Journal of Photography, which named two winning series by female photographers of their own, Priya Kambli and Katinka, 20 more winning single-images were selected to be on display in the Dumbo gallery.

With the understanding that eight out of nine photography awards are given to males, 1854 Media wishes to contribute what they can to the field of photography by making it more inclusive with female voices, “including those who are trans and non-binary.”

The opening reception is on October 22nd between 6pm to 8pm and requires an RSVP.

Ilford Photo teases release of new film stock/paper

For over a week, Ilford Photo, a leading-manufacturer in analog photography materials, has been teasing the release of new items set to be revealed late this month. By posting a series of photos which portray the silhouette of new materials, some more distinguishable than others, the company sparked worldwide speculation as to what they’ll be adding to their already-massive inventory.

The comments sections on their Instagram photos are flooded with people’s predictions, ranging from finer-grained black and white film stock to paper with different aspect ratios. Whatever it is, the speculations can stop on by October 24th and US stocks of new materials should be available within the couple of weeks that follow.
