The photos presented here are part of an ongoing series produced by Alyssa Kazew since she departed New York City in 2018. The images explore themes of alienation and desire through a perspective that is at once romantic and humorous. Drawing inspiration from internet meme culture and popular icons such as the Scream mask and SpongeBob SquarePants, Kazew's work revels in the tensions present in a world where appearance trumps truth, matters of great consequence are laughed off, and the depths of individual anxiety and depression ripple every apparently harmless surface.
