Musee Magazine: When did you first commit to the practice of image-making?

Patricia: I started taking photographs in my high school black and white darkroom class when I was seventeen. At the time, I was inspired by my darkroom teacher, and from an early age, I knew that I wanted to become an artist. When I began my undergraduate degree at The School of Visual Arts, I learned more about photography and artists that I was inspired by. I started to take my practice seriously as I worked on various projects. Fast forward a few years, and I am finishing my MFA at the Yale School of Art!

Musee Magazine: What role does the uncanny play in your practice?

Patricia: I am obsessed with the uncanny. I love a good ghost story, ufology, and anything paranormal. My dad is a huge fan of ancient aliens so maybe that’s where my interest comes from. Working with these materials is both terrifying and intriguing. They inspire me as I attempt to understand each experience and make sense of another world.

Musee Magazine: What are your thoughts on truth in photography?

Patricia: Photography is a medium that is easily pliable. I am constantly questioning what I am viewing, and with technological capabilities, anything is possible to imagine. I am interested in the line between a truth and a lie, where things become slippery and unknown. Photography is the grand stage where all of those elements can interact. We, the viewers, can sit back and enjoy the show.
