New York Art Fairs Almost Absent from Photography.

As the month of March are filled with fascinating art fairs both in New York and globally, it is important to note one trend – the general absence of photographic medium presented. While most fairs had significantly less photographers showcased relatively to other artists, Independent Art Fair seemed to have a greater portion featured compared to Volta and the Armory Art Fair, Musée staff reports. While photography has become a more and more paramount type of art, it still struggles to be represented as widely as other fine art.

Cameras Impacted

Canon closes five factories in Japan due to supply chain disrupted by Corona-virus. The shutdown will last two weeks, local news reported.

Meanwhile, the release of Nikon D6 digital SLR camera is being delayed by two months also due to Corona-virus. With the price tag of 6,500$, the camera will be a 20.8-megapixel full-frame DSLR with 14fps continuous shooting, 4K video, and a Multi-CAM 37K autofocus system, reported by Nikon to be the most powerful AF system in the company’s history.

Louise Dahl-Wolfe and Stephanie Pfriender Stylander at the Staley-Wise Gallery

Staley-Wise gallery showcases the works of two essential fashion photographers, Lousie Dahl-Wofle and Stephanie Pfriender Stylander, who worked 30 years apart yet both represented iconic movements within their times. Dahl-Wolfe's works embodied elegance throughout 1930-1950s, starting with her getting hired by by Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow in 1936. As the fashion industry changed, Dahl-Wofle's works remained a staple of classical elegance.

Pfriender Stylander, who worked after Dahl-Wolfe, represented a new wave in fashion that crossed the industry after Dahl-Wolfe's time. In the 90s and 2000s, the new wave of sexual liberation often conflicted with the previous era of grandeur and charm. Pfriender Stylander works featured young, unknown Kate Moss and often got their inspiration from the new french Wave. The exhibition will be on view from March 5 to April 25, 2020.

Is Coronavirus Affecting the Art World?

With Corona-virus immobilizing New York and the rest of the world, it is hard to ignore its impact on our social lives. With the art fairs booming in the global capital, the rules of social interaction within the art community are changing. As Musée attended numerous art fairs during the last week, we have noticed several signs of our city being in an emergency-like state. Entering the art spaces, one could notice multiple hand sanitizers at welcoming desks and door signs that suggested sick people should refrain from attending the events. Global media reports that despite the virus, international fairs continue on the planned schedules, but with increased health precautions.
