Nature and Isolation: The Abstract Landscapes of Tommy Nease

Nature and Isolation: The Abstract Landscapes of Tommy Nease

In the rugged and inhospitable landscapes shown in these photographs, one might see deities emerging, their presence contrasting against the earthly scenes, which remain natural yet surrounded by an enigmatic aura. Over millions of years, the terrain has transformed, forming layers that offer glimpses into the passage of eras. Much like a long-exposure photograph, these images serve as visual records of earthly time, revealing totemic figures that represent nature with a palpable presence.

Tommy Nease, a photographer based in Utah, embarks on continuous travels and explorations across the American West, using photography as a medium to document the intricate relationship between humans and nature. Through his work, Nease evokes a sense of wonder by employing black and white tones and striking contrasts, which give rise to vast abstractions, inviting viewers to experience a profound sense of estrangement from the natural landscapes. Nease elaborates on his series entitled “Half a Chisel”, stating, "Inspired by the geology and isolation; the photographs hint at entropy and fragility. The images depict the landscape burning and eroded yet resilient and stoic."

Entropy symbolizes the irreversible passage of time and the gradual evolution inherent in these landscapes, while fragility emphasizes the delicate balance that exists, particularly in the face of human activity. The only solitary human presence, represented within the frame symbolizes both our exploratory spirit and our insignificance around the vastness of time and these natural processes. Nease elaborates on this, "Midway through the sequence, a solitary human figure emerges, navigating an enigmatic landscape that implies the familiar human form as a drifter in an unfamiliar realm. This figure serves as a bridge, prompting the viewer to recognize themselves within the imagery and contemplate their position within the perpetual ebb and flow of order and chaos."

Enveloped in an aura of mysticism, these images challenge conventional perceptions of reality, compelling viewers to contemplate their role within the natural world. Rather than simply portraying landscapes as they exist, Nease try to convey emotions through his images, often deconstructing or distorting elements of nature to provoke introspection about our relationship with the environment, translating those struggles into a visual narrative.
