Photographers have always found religious manifestations to be a fascinating subject, inviting them into a realm of mesmerizing wonder. Irrespective of one's personal faith, these gatherings, full with rich imaginations and ancient customs, provide a chance to explore the core of human desire for transcendence. For millennia, humanity has been intertwined with religion, as it is within the confines of faith that we seek answers to life's most profound questions and comfort in the middle of these mysteries.

Indian photographer Abhishek Bhargava, has been travelling and documenting religious practices throughout his homeland. With his lens, he captures the profound moments of ecstasy and celebrations of this muslim rituals.

Recently Bhargava's photographic odyssey has taken him to the heart of Mumbai, where he documents the fervor and spiritual devotion of the Shia Muslim community during the Mahurram festival, which marks the beginning of the Islamic new year. Mahurram is a solemn occasion that commemorates the martyrdom of Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, who met his tragic fate during the Battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Mahurram, known as the day of Ashura.

During this poignant period, thousands of Shia Muslims from various corners of the city come together to participate in processions that traverse through the streets. These processions are a solemn demonstration of faith and mourning, rather than a conventional festive celebration. The photographs presented here offer a glimpse into the Mahurram festival, showcasing the deep-rooted emotions and unwavering dedication of those who partake in this sacred event. Abhishek Bhargava's photography captures the profound moments that define the Mahurram festival and the Shia Muslim community's unwavering commitment to their faith.

Bhargava's photographs remind us of the incredible power of photography in transcending boundaries and beliefs. Through his lens, we are able to witness and appreciate the diverse religious traditions that make up the rich tapestry of humanity. These photographs encourage us to reflect upon the common thread that unites all of humanity, regardless of individual faith or belief. In an increasingly interconnected world, Bhargava's work serves as a reminder of our shared human experience.
