George Tice: Lifework

Written by: Parker Renick

Developing a renowned portfolio of photography takes an incredible amount of work, talent, and dedication. Developing a multifarious collection of work that covers multiple styles proves to be even more difficult. This challenging task is demonstrated in Lifework, George Tice’s newest book covering over 50 years of his photography. In his 25th published book, coming out in May, Tice shares over 300 of his black and white images, his exhibition history, and the significant life events that shaped him into the artist he is today.

Tice is a Newark, New Jersey native who was inspired by his father at a young age to cultivate his passion for photography. He began his path toward photography as a 14-year-old boy after buying a Kodak Pony camera and joining a local camera club. At the same age, after experiencing several difficult life events which caused him to struggle in school, Tice’s principal asked what he would like to do in the future. Tice responded, “I like photography. I'd like to be a great photographer.” This goal of becoming a great photographer led to the vast collection of photographs presented by Tice in Lifework. As he advanced into his professional career, Tice became known for his vivid black and white photography and masterful skills in the darkroom that have led to his stunningly rich and iconic images.

In addition to Tice’s work, life stories, and exhibition history, Lifework also includes text contributions from Charles Stainback and the late Michael Miller. Michael Miller had a strong background in art—Miller was an editor and publisher at both New York Arts and The Berkshire Review, a teacher, a curator for the Clevland Museum of Art, Harvard University Art Museums, and exhibitions of art and photography, and a Ph.D. and an M.A. graduate from Harvard in classics and art history. Similarly, Stainback has a diverse artistic background, serving as Director of the Berman Museum of Art, Director of Exhibitions for the International Center of Photography in New York, and Director of the International Center of Photography Midtown in New York, as well as holding both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Kansas City Art Institute and the State University of New York at Buffalo respectively. Both serve as contributors on Lifework and provide detailed commentary and information on Tice’s work.

Lifework by George Tice is scheduled to be unveiled in May at AIPAD: The Photography Show in New York City. George Tice will make an appearance and sign books at the event at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 20, and noon on Saturday, May 21. Lifeworks is one of three parts of Veritas Editions’ “Trilogy of Masters,” which also features books from Kenro Izu and Paul Caponigro, all three of which are being published this spring.
