The Other Side at the Photographic Museum of Humanity

The Photographic Museum of Humanity currently has a show up called The Other Side. Curated by Danielle Villasana, this exhibition highlights 30 award-winning photographers who participated in the International Women's Media Foundation's Adelante Latin American Reporting Initiative. The show, which will run through April 5th, 2021, is fully online and deals primarily with themes of immigration policy, displacement, and the anxieties and complexities that surround modern-day migration. Covering various elements of physical and temporal movement, this exhibition is a multimedia portrait of what drives people to leave behind everything they’ve ever known, as well as the hope that gets them through the risks and the uncertainty of that journey.

PHOTO|BRUT is up at the American Folk Art Museum

Photo| Brut opened at the American Folk Art Museum opened on January 24th and will run through June 6th 2021. The show represents a continuation of the American Folk Art Museum’s mission to champion the works of self-taught artists. This exhibition focuses primarily on the work of French filmmaker Bruno Decharme, and discusses the subjective collecting activity that brought him from one discovery to another, without the constraints of a historical framework. The exhibition is augmented by the museum’s vast collection, as well as artworks brought together by American collectors and public organizations. The show actively probes themes of gender expansiveness, intimacy, and seeking connections to the imperceptible.

Lawrence Jackson Named photographer to Vice President Kamala Harris

Lawrence Jackson was named Kamala Harris’s official photographer on January 15th. Jackson isn’t new to the White House— he was a staff photographer there during Barack Obama’s presidency. Not only is Harris’s Vice Presidency historic, but Jackson’s coverage is, too— as she continues to represent Black excellence on a national and international stage, Jackson will take the lead on capturing those soon-to-be-iconic images.

Photo 2021 (Photo Australia) Is Live

The Photo Australia festival’s inaugural year was scheduled to take place last year, but was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the festival will take place more or less as planned, primarily through in-person events. The festival was conceived in collaboration with more than 40 different cultural institutions, museums, galleries, and universities, with the goal to produce Australasia’s largest and most significant photography event to date. The Festival features free exhibitions, outdoor displays, and artist commissions across Melbourne and regional Victoria, as well as educational programming and events. Organized around the theme of “The Truth,” Photo 2021 explores the context of the photographic image in a time when visual documentation is more complicated than ever.
