Weekend Portfolio: Antonis Theodoridis
All Images and text by Antonis Theodoridis.
Antonis Theodoridis is an Athens-based artist, working in the medium of Photography. He is a Fulbright Foundation scholar and holds a Photography MFA degree from the University of Hartford, Connecticut. His practice is a mixture of traditional analogue photography along with digital processes, research, collage, and printing.
Ways of Escape is an intricate entanglement of symbols, human figures, and unresolved landscapes, inviting the viewer to traverse Athens as a city with an enigmatic present. Frequently portrayed as the birthplace of western culture, Athens is a perfect backdrop for projected historical assumptions, which cast shadows on a shattered present reality. Is every city expected to live up to the specific ideas that formed it? The series follows the traces of these ideas by observing the surface of Athens: its walls and facades, the people who inhabit it and the barriers that are raised to define and contain its identity.
Ways of Escape was exhibited at the Benaki Museum as part of the main program of Athens Photo Festival in 2017.
