“For us becoming a duo meant constant development, we taught each other everything we knew, and now we are one brain working together.”

Interview by Qimei Fu

In many of your works, there is one human figure surrounded by the nature. What do you try to express from these scenes?

Nature and humans are interdependent, connecting deeply, and influencing each other irreversibly. They have always been our biggest inspiration, and we find beauty in endless and wild landscapes easily. Nudity is another protagonist in our works, it is preconditioned by nature and is the purest form of humans, as it is how we all are born. Overall, we would like people to evaluate the natural environment more, want it to become an inspiration to live better lives, make people more thoughtful about resources and their limits, and finally start living less urbanized lifestyles by our works.

Working as a duo, what's the difference from working individually?

We used to be doing photography separately before we met 12 years ago. But we only became photographers when we started working together (before we were just a couple of curious kids). For us becoming a duo meant constant development, we taught each other everything we knew, and now we are one brain working together (and four hands, which is convenient when we have too much work to do at a time). We can not compare it to working individually as we can not imagine doing so. It feels like not our way. We do not exist separately at all.

Bringing these surreal scenes to live, what is your working process? What are you working on now?

We just finished working on the ad campaign of Couture hat pieces by Ruslan Baginskiy with stylist Julie Pelipas. It took a full month to prepare and shoot. We are very happy with the results. It was released just today and was already published in Vogues, Elles, and Harpers Bazaars in different countries. And before we got our shooting for Burberry released, and we're working on personal projects a lot. Our book will also be out this autumn, so we can not wait for it as we were working on it for the last two years. As for the process, we usually put maximum emphasis on the idea. It will work only if it's interesting. And the other important issue is the quality of work. We usually shoot with medium format film cameras as they allow us to be sure of the best results we can achieve.

Describe your creative process in one word.

Perfectionist.

If you could teach a one-hour class on anything, what would it be?

It would be how to create something that would be interesting and arouse attention and address some critical issues simultaneously, as our personal works are all about it.

What was the last book you read or film you saw that inspired you?

The last book read was by Mark Manson called The Art of Not Giving a F, as friends presented it and it also exposed a bit another outlook for how to handle the World around then we are used to (more realistic and sobering). But that's not what we would recommend, even though it was ok and somehow even useful. Read classics! Erich Maria Remarque is Tania's all-time fave for instance.

What is the most played song in your music library?

To be honest, we are working on an advertising video for a brand at the moment and making a soundtrack with a composer for two weeks or so, so all that comes to mind now is that same melody we obviously overlistened to lately. In general, we like hip hop, RnB, or techno.

How do you take your coffee?

Roma drinks espresso from time to time, and Tania has one coffee per day only, very strong, usually double espresso (as a coffeeholic, this question hurts, as she almost feels the smell right now).
