He was riding home for afternoon lunch and a rest. The wind carried a chill, and he kept his mind on the incoming sandwich. So much so that he almost missed the small yelps.

He stopped and listened. The sounds were unmistakably coming from the sewer, and he grimaced realizing what he must do.

The cover came up with a few hefts and the little cries picked up in speed and volume, though the animal was still unseen. He tried the voice he had used for his babies.

“It’s okay, little one. It’s okay.”

He got on the ground and put out his hand.
