We didn’t always get along. In fact, we are quite the opposites. I was hot and he was cold. I was happy and he was sad. We tried not to mix, but it was inevitable. His sadness turned into my sadness. It started in waves. We would be sitting together, like always, and I found myself imagining what would happen if I sat elsewhere.

What if I went to the ends of the earth and back? What if I rounded the earth until I got dizzy? What if I went here and there, the moon and back, all on my very own?

It was quite freeing to think, but it’s just a fantasy. Instead, I stayed. I let us mix together, sadness and sadness hand in hand walking off into the sunset until we fall off the edge and fall and fall and fall.

We are still opposites now. I stopped fantasizing about my other life, my independent life. We just coexist, like the sand and the sea. I am sand and he is water, infinitely different but forced together by the laws of nature, inseparable no matter how many times the waves try to run away and never return. I keep coming back to my sand, and he lets me, no matter how many times I try to get washed back out to sea.

We are stronger now, our own little beach.
