When I’m on the street, I’m a ‘hunter’ rather than a ‘fisher’, I’m almost always on the move and rarely stay in the same spot for more than a minute or two and rely on instinct and observation to identify good scenes as they emerge or develop. The road where this shot was taken tends to be feast or famine, either lots of good scenes or very dry, and on the day of this shot it had been very dry and dull. But as I walked past this café window, the purple-pink of two matching outfits caught my eye. I turned and framed the shot very quickly, hoping to catch the twin old ladies in a candid moment, but they spotted me and I’m glad they did! They both clearly loved the idea of having their picture taken and their joy and their matching outfits made for a compelling image. So compelling, in fact, that it gave birth to a whole series: ‘Life in windows’. I saw that people in windows in public spaces often forget they’re visible, so you can catch moments of intense emotion or interest, while the window naturally frames the scene and allows a very vivid capture. I still love to capture classic ‘street’ images first and foremost, but I always have an eye on the café, restaurant and bar windows I pass!
