This photo was made at a gear fetish convention. The participants wanted to recreate the logo of the convention out of sleep sacks. I had just returned home from a research trip abroad, interviewing soldiers in state mandated military service. With mortality on my mind, the black fetish sacks became body bags, and reminded me of the casualties of war, not just the loss of life, but the loss of spirit that can come with taking the life of another or losing your identity, awash into the mix of a military unit.
In the reality of the fetish convention, the people inside these sleep-sacks have chosen to be there, yet once inside, they are unable to free themselves. The folks caring for them — bringing them water, keeping them cool, helping them stay calm — reminded me of nurses, caretakers, and activists – helping those that are strapped into a situation in which they can not escape unaided.
This combination of unique real world imagery that stemmed from the fetish community, a subject matter I have long been interested in, with the additional context of the soldiers, created an incredibly unique moment that I knew I needed to capture.
