AMY ARBUS : BEYOND REASON

JUNE 14 – JULY 16, 2024

In these new pictures the muscularity and torque of the figures is riveting. They are poised; in danger even, but in an exquisite arc of pain, desire, beauty, and an almost gruesome request of their own bodies to do something beyond reason. Perhaps more than anything in a time of overstimulation from screens and moving images Amy Arbus has given us something we would not have without her camera and her own distinguished experience behind the lens. Matching an everyday essential need to understand human form with an investigation into the strange subcultures of circuses and acrobatic performers reopens the nearly forgotten world of separate communities like travelling circuses, spiritual communities, and other esoteric groups that have come to be eradicated or considered abnormal, even dangerous. Yet they are also remembered as lively alternatives to mainstreaming. Beyond Reason is a way back and a way in to the impossible, improbable, exquisite joy and pain of reaching away from convention into using one’s body to create and occupy new social spaces.
