Alessandra Sanguinetti uses photography to explore human relationships across time, from childhood to adulthood. Her camera captures dreamy scenarios with mythology-related imagery. Life and death are intertwined in her work, as she portrays the in-between, the sopor. From September 9th to October 21st, the Webber Gallery will host an insightful display of Sanguinetti’s life’s work, unveiling a triad of projects that offer an interesting perspective on our world.

Sanguinetti began her career in the Argentine countryside. On the sixth day is an exploration that works along the metaphysical line between beast and man. It provides a window into the relationship between farm animals and the region's people. While reminiscent of children’s tales and myths, the pictures carry a solemn tone, revealing the hardships and suffering of these helpless beings.

She met the two girls on that same farm who became the main characters in her famous, long-lasting story. The Adventures of Guille and Belinda chronicles the growth of two cousins navigating a world traditionally dominated by men. Sanguinetti was mainly a witness and guide, creating scenes of playfulness and theatricality. As if her camera becomes an extension of their imagination, Sanguinetti entwines her spirit with theirs, blurring the line between observer and participant.

The American-born Argentinian photographer’s latest work embarks on a poetic exploration of the American Midwest. She ventured to Black River Falls, Wisconsin, where she engaged in a visual dialogue with the town’s past, inspired by a 19th-century book she discovered as a child. Her photographs, reminiscent of the book Wisconsin Death Trip, evoke a haunting beauty, drawing viewers into a world beyond time. Sanguinetti’s contributions undoubtedly reference The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and are influenced by the gothic, outside-of-time atmospheres, with ghostly characters playing in melancholic settings.

Collectively, these projects resonate with human connections, the complexities of life, and the mysteries of mortality. The exhibition, The Sixth Day, invites us to reflect on these facets of existence. For more information, visit the gallery website.
