I spent the final days of summer 2020 in the Hampton Bays with my husband and sons, briefly trading in city life and a raging pandemic for the calm of sand and sea. The instant my husband discovered the kayak and vest that our rental house provided, he eagerly readied himself to launch into the Long Island Sound, only a short walk from the end of our street. He began to tell me how freeing it was to be on the water, to feel like he could go anywhere he wanted. How the physical exertion made him feel so alive. I was thinking about midlife, masculinity, and the heroic figure of Odysseus; his long journey on the sea and the lessons of his own vulnerability at the end. I felt my husband’s intense longing in that instant, and asked him to stay put for some pictures.
