New York Art Book Fair

The New York Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1 opened doors Friday and served as a playground for those who love all there is to love about art and books. There were classrooms converted into dining halls, there were chalkboards, there were mustaches, there were Jame Joyce-style spectacles: The crowd certainly fit the book fair profile.

“The Dome” and “The School Yard” enclosed 98 different stands that consisted of art zines, some of which had a gritty DIY nature, and some elegant and neatly presented. The atmosphere was drenched in enthusiasm, and many viewers roamed the isles appreciating the wide range of artistic content available in print.

Inside “The Dome” was an exhibition of works by the late Bruno Munari, put together by Edizioni Corraini. The exhibit displays Munari's out-of-print artist and design books that proved to be highly influential.

Inside there was a wide range of international photography books, publishers and magazines to browse through. I came across a handful notable and intriguing photography-based operations that stuck out:

Girls Like Us is independent, cutting edge, and it's all about women. Also affiliated with Capricious Magazine.

PowerHouse Books is independent, Brooklyn-based, and publishes books featuring famous photographers and popular children's books.

Kodoji Press is an independent publishing house that focuses on contemporary photography.  I found them in “The Sweden Room.”
