I’d been filming in the back streets of a suburb of Havana, a typical steamy Cuban day where the heat bakes into the pavements and hangs heavily in the air around you. On my way back to the hotel in a taxi, as the oppressively hot sun was finally starting to relent a little, I came across children playing with a broken water hose pipe that some construction workers had left running in a ditch. I asked my driver to stop and I jumped out with my camera in hand.

It was so joyful to see the kids enjoying themselves, exuberantly spraying each other with the refreshing stream, as their families and neighbors stood by, none of the adults batting an eyelid. Nobody telling them off or asking them to behave.  But this is life in Cuba. Here there is a freedom that can’t be described. It’s a lost freedom, a lust for life, and the streets are full of that buzz. It was a special moment to capture the freedom, the unbridled joy of children’s innocence in this image.
