Returning to the Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris for its 25th edition, Paris Photo—the largest international photography fair—will take place from November 10 through November 13, 2022. Showcasing the work of new and established artists, publishers, and gallery owners from around the world, the fair will promote a comprehensive overview of global photographic culture through the exhibition of works that rely on the medium in both classical and innovative techniques and styles.
From Los Angeles to Tehran, Ljubljana to Hong Kong, the Paris Photo fair will assemble one-hundred and eighty-three exhibitors from thirty-one countries. Organized around three sectors that respectively showcase the works of galleries, up-and-coming photographers, and book publishers, the main sector will exhibit images from one-hundred and thirty-four galleries from across twenty-nine countries. The second sector, Curiosa, which has been guest curated by Holly Roussell, will exhibit the works of seventeen rising stars in photography from twelve countries. Finally, the photo book section will host thirty-four publishers from nine countries who will present unique prints and editions of their books, exclusive previews of newly-slated publications, and a signature program which will present visitors with the opportunity to have photo books signed by the top names in photography.
The full program at Paris Photo 2022 will include a variety of group and solo shows from some of the world’s most admired and forward-thinking photographers. For instance, among the exhibiting solo artists, Rosalind Fox Solomon—a student and contemporary of Lisette Model who has documented events from the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1987 to the expansion and re-opening of MoMA in 2019—will be exhibiting some of her earliest work from the 1970’s when she frequented the Scottsboro First Monday Flea Market. Widely known at the time as the scene of the Scottsboro Boys judicial injustice case, Solomon traveled to the town from her then-home in Chattanooga, Tennessee to photograph the dolls, Southern ephemera and neo-Nazi paraphernalia being sold at the flea market as well as the diverse and characteristically Southern citizens of the Alabama city. Among the group shows that will be on view, Elles x Paris Photo will present The Path, a show curated by Federica Chiocchetti that promotes the role and visibility of women in photography through the exhibition of works from seventy-seven female-identifying photographers. Magnum Photos will also be exhibiting work from Martin Parr and Henri Cartier-Bresson, among others.
The Platform, a four day event space, will host conversations and performances regarding the vanguard of photography and artistic culture and practices. From lectures to Q&A’s with photographers, visitors will have a variety of events to choose from whether they hope for entertainment or enlightenment in regards to the photographic medium.
Tickets to Paris Photo can be procured through the photo fair’s website. For those unable to attend Paris Photo in person, an online viewing room will be available for their consideration and will provide art and photography lovers with the opportunity to discover emerging artists, acquire books and prints, and attend events from the comfort of their homes.
