Performance artist Ulay passes away at 76

Known for his pioneering and often dangerous performance art pieces, Ulay passed away in Ljubljana, Slovenia at the age of 76 while fighting lymphatic cancer. The Amsterdam based artist found large success during his relationship with Marina Abramvoić, a Yugoslavian performance artist. Together, the duo become renowned for 14 “relation works” which sought to destroy their individual egos while becoming a single artistic entity. Their most famous works come from early in their career together such as, The Other: Rest Energy and Light/ Dark. The pair split up through their performance piece, The Lovers: The Great Wall of China, performed in 1988 in which the pair started at both ends of The Great Wall and walked approximately 1,500 miles to meet in the middle. Ulay’s gallery, Richard Saltoun, confirmed Ulay’s passing on March 2, 2020 with the statement: “Ulay was the freest of spirits – a pioneer and provocateur with a radically and historically unique oeuvre, operating at the intersection of photography and the conceptually oriented approaches of performance and body art. His passing leaves a momentous gap in the world – one that will not be so easily replaced.”

Plastic Bag Ban: Day Two

Today marks the second day that New York State enacts its plastic bag ban. This morning outside the G Line Deli in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a shopper could be seen clutching the contents of a quick morning grocery run. Governor Cuomo signed legislation last March to ban single-use plastic bags in an effort to reduce waste, and New Yorkers are not all smiles about the new rule. Now, they will either have to pay 5 cents for paper bags, or remember to bring reusable totes. However, the stores have until 1st of April, 2020, until they will be penalized for distributing the plastic bags to the customers.

The Armory Artfair Opens its Doors This Week

One of the most significant New York art fairs, The Armory, is set to run from March 5 to March 8, 2020. The fair is an essential destination for the 20th- and 21st-centuries art lovers, who will also be able to discover the most innovative artistic projects, get acquainted with the leading galleries and participate in engaging public programs.

The Armory is celebrating its 25th year of operation, after it was opened in 1992 by the four New York Galleries: Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks, and Paul Morris at the Gramercy Hotel. There, the fair opened its first exhibitions as it showcased the artists' works in hotels rooms.
