Helmut Newton: Legacy

Helmut Newton: Legacy

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Helmut Newton retrospective at his foundation at the Museum for Photography in Berlin could not open as planned on what would have been Newton’s 100th birthday, on 31 October 2020. The show is now scheduled to open on 31 October 2021, and will be accompanied by a new, comprehensive monograph.

In the retrospective, foundation director and exhibition curator Matthias Harder focuses on Newton’s fashion photography, including numerous previously unknown or forgotten images. Of course, Newton’s many iconic photographs from the other two main genres in which he worked – portraiture and nudes – will also be included. These will be complemented by Polaroids and contact sheets, which offer insight into Newton’s final selections for magazine editorials, fashion designers, and advertisers, and interestingly paraphrase his well-known visual work.

Following the presentation in Berlin, this exhibition of more than 300 photographs will travel to other venues abroad, starting in summer 2022.
