A crowded opening for Zwelethu Mthethwa's exhibit!

Jack Shainman Gallery

The large open space of the Jack Shainman Gallery was crowded with fashionable gallery goers but the photographs immediately caught my attention. Zwelethu Mthethwa's sixth solo exhibition at the gallery consists of photographs from three new series including The Brave Ones, Hope Chest, and The End of An Era. The artist born in South Africa focuses his lens on the people and landscapes of the country and surrounding countries.

All of the photographs are large scale and deserve a long viewing. The subjects range from quite young to very old, but all have captivating gazes that forced me to get very close to the photographs. The colors in the photographs are vibrant and since the photographs are so large, I almost felt like I was in the setting of them. Having recently traveled to Zimbabwe, the immense and colorful landscapes in the photographs took me back again.

The work is on display through February 23rd, 2013.
