Hannah Traore Gallery proudly presents Quil Lemons and his emotionally charged photography. Lemons' exhibition, a Journey into African American Homosocial Studies, is a testament to his ability to capture raw emotions. His lens immortalizes the passion and spirit of his friends, their thirst for experimentation, and the unbreakable bond of his family's love and support. Throughout the photographs, the different themes and colors tell a story of creativity and hunger for development. The pictures are enriching and significant to growth and renewal.
‘It’s Just Love’ is a prime example of the shared admiration evident through Lemons and his companions. The photograph's title almost hints at a harsh tone in a passive-aggressive way, which adds to the multifaceted layer of the art. It seems as if Lemons and his friends are showing their playful and erotic side through the spooning and cuddling position; however, the title permits the viewer to pause and examine. The image in front is simply just love, and it brings the question into mind that there can be physical touch and love without the need for a sexual nature. The viewer is left at ease and content with the image, as the connection of the individuals is profound.
‘God- Fathers + God-Brothers’ immediately captures familial bonds. The ages of the three individuals represent their current stages in life. It is seen that Lemons can pull all sorts of personalities out from his models as he controls everything. The distinct personalities of each member shine through their choice of clothing, colors, and textures in the image. The photo captures the theme of self-acceptance and familial love.
‘Champion’ exudes self-acceptance, love, and confidence. The photograph's title indicates that the viewers' desired emotional response is accomplishment and joy. Gazing at this image, one can sense the individual's firm stance. Due to polarization, it is evident that this person has found peace and stability within themselves and their surroundings. The change in the shades of light in the image's background, from lighter to darker, depicts the constant change in seasons, similar to personal growth.
