About the artist: Alice is a queer, female visual artist and analog photographer based in Portland, Oregon. She is known for her compelling travel street photography, a collection of B&W and Color medium format film photography and can regularly be found behind a 1950’s Rolleiflex or in a vintage Fotoautomat. Her joyful street photography work has won several awards and been exhibited in galleries around the world. Images from her series “Nostalgia” have also been published in All About Photos, The Analog Club and received an Honorable Mention in Life Framer’s Series Award. Alice is a free lance photographer and a repair technician for the surviving chemical photo booths. She is inspired by the feminist self portraiture of Francesca Woodman and Nicki S. Lee as well as artists that have explored the photo booth as a medium such as Jared Bark and Lee Goldie.

About the project: Behind the Curtain

I am socially driven and create work as a response to my lived experience with sexism, body dysmorphia and mental health. My work is self reflective, combining pop culture references with methods such as drawing and collage. I have a long history with the photo booth and it is my choice of medium for its historical and metaphoric meaning. Historically, behind the photo booth curtain was the a safe place for people to explore their self expression and inner monologues without the intimidation of interacting with a photographer. Metaphorically, the chemically developed images are often flawed yet simultaneously whole and complete. For self portraiture, I see the photo booth as a complete studio where it uniquely captures a sequence of time. My work tells stories through multiple strips or single frames, weaving together narratives in which I discuss and explore the above topics that I have been witness to, simultaneously providing the viewer with imagery that creates meaningful dialogue.
