Photo Journal Monday: Fryd Frydendahl
[N]ephews is a photography series about navigating tragedy. Fryd Frydendahl’s older sister passed away giving birth to her second son, leaving behind new her newborn and his older brother. Their aunt, who was just beginning her education at Fatamorgana School of Photography in Copenhagen, was devastated by grief.
As a means of processing the tragedy, Frydendahl began photographing her nephews, a project that would – ten years later – reveal itself as Nephews, a book in which the beauty of the photographs within are matched only by the poignancy and tenderness of their subject. Exploring the boys’ oscillations from the depths of grief and loneliness to the banal, ordinary moments of life as a child or teenager, the book is a tribute to emotional resilience, playfulness, brotherhood and recovery as well as to a lost and deeply loved mother and sister.
As the boys’ identities ceaselessly shift – whether through the processes of tie and aging or through child’s play with costumes – Frydendahl’s photographs build an intimate, unforgettable portrait.
