June 28th was the last day of Magnum at 75, a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Magnum Photos.
Founded in Paris by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David ‘Chim’ Seymour, the photographic cooperative is internationally renowned with offices in New York City, Paris, London, and Tokyo.
The program centered on its capturing of the most significant global events through photography. Founded in the aftermath of World War II, Magnum Photos committed to telling stories through unique and accurate photography.
The anniversary events included the Seeing Ukraine program at the New York Public Library, where the main discussion focused on capturing Ukrainians not through the lens of war victims, but people of culture, art and a rich history.
The program also seeks to answer, ‘can photographs today still serve as credible witnesses to war and its horrors as they did in the twentieth century?’ In a digital age where anything can be altered and modified, how much longer can we trust what we see?
The program also included book signings, workshops, cinema screenings, panels, performances and more.
“Our 75th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the collective’s legacy of capturing moments in history of global significance – a legacy we are committed to continuing,” says Olivia Arthur, President of Magnum Photos.
