The Other Self

"Photograph this, the taxi refuses to take me to my next show". It's 2am in Amsterdam and Abby Omg, a drag queen from Brazil, has to wait for the next taxi. In the midst of the glitz and glamour, you sometimes end up forgetting the homophobia that still hangs around in the Dutch capital.

It's 2019 and I chose to follow Abby throughout her night. First at the Queen's Head where she plays a woman from the 1920s, then at Club Nyx, a nightclub with endless floors overflowing with parties. As the evening progresses, I capture this true duality between Henrique the everyday man, and her character with the tight dresses and eccentric make-up.

Mirrors, screens, and the two sides of themself, their two opposing and inseparable selves. This series of photographs is a testimony to Abby's life as a drag queen in today's open and extravagant, yet modest and discriminating Amsterdam society.
