Living With Fire

I began documenting wildfires when the Rim Fire burned dangerously close to my community. Watching from my front deck as the fire torched the hills around my home, I knew I needed to understand and document fire and the changing landscape. The following spring, I enrolled in a week-long firefighting course, capped by working in the field alongside a class of future firefighters

From my home base in California's wildfire country on Sierra Miwok lands near Yosemite National Park, I continue to document many aspects of fire and the changing climate. When I arrived in rural California nearly 20 years ago, the wildfire season typically lasted from August through October. Living with fire is now a year-round fact of life.

I am a member of Women Photograph, National Press Photographers Association, The Journal Collective and the Society of Professional Journalists.
