Doug Biggert

Hitchhiker Series, c. 1970s, C-print, 3 1/2 x 4 7/8 inches, Unique

George Adams Gallery | March 31 – May 7

The George Adams Gallery, in conjunction with the Robert Mann Gallery, is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Doug Biggert. The exhibition encompasses two distinct bodies of work, each the product of years spent documenting chance encounters. The first is a series of portraits of hitchhikers Biggert has picked up on his travels, predominately along I-80 and Route 49 in Northern California beginning in the early 1970s. The second features patrons who frequented Socrates Sandal shop on West Balboa Boulevard in Newport Harbor, CA, from 1968-1972. Over forty snapshots from the Hitchhikers series – which runs to approximately 450 images over almost three decades – will be on view across both galleries. In addition, a small cross-section of the Sandal Shop images will be presented at the George Adams Gallery, along with a documentary short produced about the artist, Beautiful America, from 2008.

KLOMPCHING GALLERY | MARCH 9 – APRIL 30, 2022

Artist Reception: Thursday, April 7, 6:00–8:00pm

KLOMPCHING GALLERY is pleased to present Land Revisited, an exhibition of artworks, utilizing the landscape as a thematic link between five artists pursuing very different creative photographic interventions—both in terms of their use of the medium, and their treatment of/relationship to the natural environment. We witness the landscape in the photograph, not as a straight forward re-presentation, but rather as a site of intervention, conceptually and physically.

Whitney Museum of American Art | OPENING APRIL 6

The 2022 Biennial features dynamic contributions that take different forms over the course of the presentation: artworks—even walls—change, and performance animates the galleries and objects. With a roster of artists at all points in their careers, the Biennial surveys the art of these times through an intergenerational group, many with an interdisciplinary perspective, and the curators have chosen not to have a separate performance or video and film program. Rather, these forms are integrated into the exhibition with an equal and consistent presence in the galleries.
