Portraits of My Art Friends in Saigon:

Although my journey of becoming an artist started at an art school in the United States, my identity and life have always been tied to my home in Saigon, Vietnam. Halfway through college, I had to come back and stay put during the years of 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. It was a time in which I was trying to find myself a community here. Photography helped me search for an answer, as I seeked to picture what it was like to be an artist in Saigon, in my little corner of that world. I made these portraits of my friends to observe how we inhabit our environment, as both people and artists. Currently untitled and ongoing, this project is something that I will continue to build on now that I have completely moved back home.

About Lien:

Lien Pham (b. 1997) is a Vietnamese artist based in Ho Chi Minh City. Lien’s multi-media work is mainly composed of photography and video, documenting and critiquing the intimacies that exist within the sites and relationships of her own and her communities’. The lens-based mediums are extensions of herself, allowing her to record as she observes and attempts to understand the relationships that define hers and her close others’ experiences of life. Situated in our contemporaneity, these relationships occur in the areas between the staged and real, digital and tangible, and global and local.

You can find more of Lien’s work on her website and Instagram.
