Images and Text by Hai Zhang

Hai Zhang is a Chinese born artist based in New York.

From 2008 to 2019, Hai Zhang traveled to China intensively and continuously to photograph the ever evolving social and physical landscape in China. With the focus on the cities and citizenship as well as the mobility in China, the project BEING is a living organism that makes the archive of extensive collection of photographs and documentary materials alive.
As the project aims to evoke the public debates and dialogues, we bring the individuals’ lives in China to the forefront of the contextual discussions. People’s intimate life stories, depicted in rich and raw details, have so much to say of the era in China and challenge the abstract understanding of a country.
The project creates a collective viewfinder to China by acknowledging the existence of individuals, point views and their impacts to the significant movements in our society.
