My working process is quite simple — I drive or walk around until I find something that compels me to stop, examine and possibly photograph. Usually I let my instincts dictate what to shoot and worry later in the editing stage how to make the images coherent. The photograph in question appeared in my book titled Nothing's Coming Soon (2019).

I was driving on an interstate in Georgia when I came across this deer and knew immediately that it demanded closer inspection. I like pictures that produce conflicting emotions simultaneously. This one in particular feels both comical, yet also slightly menacing. One of my favorite aspects of photography is discovering strangely captivating scenes in the world — such as this one — that feel like secrets made specifically for me to discover.
