Courtney D. Garvin, a South Carolina born visual artist focuses her efforts on video, photography, and sound to document “Blackness and the ways it can be presented.” Garvin’s work is centered on that notion and the ways in which Blackness is portrayed across a variety of platforms and mediums. Her passion stems from a large interest in memory, family histories, sexuality and storytelling while exploring the challenging boundaries throughout relationships. Garvin, a graduate from Syracuse University and a current resident in New York City is a 2018 Magnum Foundation Photography & Social Justice Fellow.

The featured untitled works come from a product photo shoot done for an online retailer in 2016, but Garvin’s work, like her series, In These Clasped Hands have been exhibited across the state of New York. She has also given talks at Columbia University, and Photoville, Brooklyn while her work has been mentioned in several publications including Bloomberg Businessweek, The New York Times Lens Blog and Buzzfeed News.
