Tensions have been high in New York City and across the country this election cycle. The ideological schism between our two major parties feels increasingly wide, and it is clear that nationwide anxiety is only growing as we cope with the uncertainty of our reality. With mail-in votes still being counted, we have no clearer idea of who will be the next president than we did last night before the polls closed. However, there are some seemingly definitive results we can take collective comfort in.

There was never much question about Joe Biden winning the vote in established blue states such as New York and California. Biden has also triumphed in most of the Northeast, excluding Pennsylvania, where Trump currently has 53.3% of votes. Conversely, Donald Trump has either won or is leading in much of the South, including in Texas and Florida, two swing states which have a significant number of electoral votes. As far as other battleground states go, Biden has won fewer than Trump.

Some sources claim that Biden is on track to win the presidency, while others say it is simply too early to make any predictions. For many of us, our experience of the last presidential election informs how we react to this one—people are afraid to get their hopes up for their candidate, as we have all seen how unpredictable the end result can be.

New York City, for the most part, has been quieter than usual this morning. Even in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been far less traffic on the streets as many New Yorkers anxiously await any definitive election news. However, a few people have taken to the streets to carry the city’s legacy of fearless self-expression. And while anxiety is undeniably merited by the current state of affairs, we can all look to these individuals with gratitude; unfortunately, we may have much longer to wait, and anything uplifting during these times cannot be taken for granted.
