Whitney Biennial Postponed

The Whitney Biennial has been postponed a year in an effort to properly prioritize other shows that were postponed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. This announcement comes just a month after the Whitney Museum of Art reopened to the public on September 3. The exhibition, originally set to open in the spring of 2021, will now open in April 2022 and run through August of that year. The Whitney is only the latest institution to join the list of other world-renowned biennial shows being pushed back next year, including the Venice Biennale in Italy and the Biennale de Lyon in France.

32 Tons of Carrots

Last Wednesday, perplexed students watched as 32 tons of carrots were dumped on Goldsmiths University’s campus in London. The bewildering scene, though initially thought to be an elaborate prank, is actually artist Rafael Pérez Evans’s latest installation work. An MFA candidate at Goldsmiths, his work focuses on urban and rural landscapes and the complexities and tension that lie within the relationship between the two contrasting worlds. His latest piece, titled Grounding, mimics the huge piles of unused produce dumped in urban areas, forming a sort of organic barricade. The installation also alludes to an act of protest historically used by farmers to make unavoidably visible their undervalued labor. Evans used produce deemed “unsuitable for sale” by UK food distributors, and the carrots will later be donated to local farm animals.

Beirut Re-Store: Jamie Hawksworth, Harley Weir Sell Prints To Aid in Beirut Recovery

In August, a huge explosion in the port of Beirut ravaged the Lebanese capital, killing over 200 people and leaving 6,500 injured. Immediately following the blast, social media brought people around the world together to provide support to the people of Beirut in the form of fundraisers, medical aid, and trauma counseling. Now, two months after the devastating explosion, artists, photographers, and designers are joining forces and selling works to aid in the continued long-term recovery in Beirut. Amongst the world-renowned artists donating works for the fundraiser are photographers Jamie Hawksworth and Harley Weir. The fundraiser launched Friday, October 2 and will continue through January, with all proceeds going directly to relief organizations approved by the Beirut Emergency Fund 2020.

A New Side of David Bowie

This week, tickets will be released for photographer Geoff MacCormack’s newest exhibition at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in England. Featuring over 60 rediscovered and never-before-seen images of superstar David Bowie, the exhibition, titled Rock ‘n’ Roll With Me: Bowie/MacCormack 1973-76, lends viewers an intimate glimpse into the life of an international pop icon in his prime. Bowie and MacCormack shared a close friendship with a history dating all the way back to their childhood days. MacCormack’s keen photographic eye chronicled Bowie’s rise to fame in a way nobody else could, and those behind the scenes images are now set to be on display for the first time ever.
