Woman Crush Wednesday: Kadiya Qasem
Interview by Kylie G Bryant
Your work has a lovely and cohesive dreamlike quality running through it, especially in The Allure of Otherness. What are your actual dreams like and is this a place you draw inspiration from?
Thank you. The Allure of Otherness explores the fantasy of desiring someone because of their difference and came out of what I would describe as a waking dream state.
Interestingly, I don’t think I dream much, or if I do, I have trouble remembering them. My inspiration usually comes from daydreaming. I like it when my mind wanders, free of distraction. On reflection, when I began making the series, I was in a contemplative place. I enjoyed the rhythm of my thought process during that time, almost like I was seducing myself in some way.
I know you have a background in media studies with a focus on race and culture. How do you find that influencing your work?
It has been hugely influential. I was born in Britain in the 1970s to a Greek mother and Yemeni father at a time when racism was rife. My academic background gave me some intellectual distance and a framework to begin to understand the hostility directed towards my family. Something as a child, I never fully understood. It also showed me the importance of telling our stories and shaping our own narratives. I believe that through that process we can find belonging.
How has your process been affected by quarantine and recent global events?
I have found myself fluctuating between being highly focussed and unable to concentrate at all. Finding the middle ground has been a challenge as has satiating the need for human connection.
Describe your creative process in one word.
Salvation
If you could teach a one-hour class on anything, what would it be?
Understanding horse behaviour.
What was the last book you read or film you saw that inspired you?
I am currently reading Anam Cara, Spiritual Wisdom from the Celtic World by John O’Donohue. It is like a balm for the soul and is firing up my imagination.
What is the most played song in your music library?
That’s a tough question. Right now it's probably Mystic Brew by Ronnie Foster.
How do you take your coffee?
I'm more of a tea drinker, because coffee sends me into the stratosphere energy wise, but I love the taste. When I do it’s with milk or if I'm feeling very decadent cream.
