Art Out: Chicago Expo
Writing by Ruben Natal-San Miguel
There is a pretty strong selection of photography and mixed media photo based work visible at the Chicago Expo Art Fair at the Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois. Opening today, Friday 9/28 through Sunday 9/30. The Aperture Foundation booth has a pretty strong range, imagery, and the most contemporary names/images in the photography field of today such as Alex Prager and Todd Hido. While there, do not forget to look (and maybe take home) the strong limited editions from new discovery photographer Tyler Mitchell (Beyonce’s discovery and vogue cover photographer). They have a very affordable pricing.
Local Chicago galleries, such as Catherine Edelman, are showcasing the work of Lori Nix, among many, which merge with the NYC galleries such as Salon 94 which is featuring large scale photographs by Laurie Simmons. A great and spectacular mixed media photo based installation by Salon 94’s artist, Dzine Rolón, about Hurricane Maria hit home and bonded us together. It is a must see.
Photography in this fair has a pretty strong presence and visibility; something that has been pretty lackluster for a while during other previous art fairs. Maybe its a strong indication of better things to come.
