Project: We’re Here If You Need Us
FFA (Future Farmers of America) was the most popular sport at my high school. I didn’t identify with the masculine-farmer-persona adopted by my classmates, they seemed to have an instinctual knowledge of livestock and truck repair baked into their DNA. I could never tap into this, but then again, I never really wanted to. I see these same traits in my family.
“We’re Here If You Need Us” follows my family’s life and work on their cattle ranch. The project is an intimate look into one family’s journey through life’s hardships and their pursuit of happiness through the slow-paced simplicity ranching offers. The title comes from my parent’s attachment to their place, “We love you but you’ll have to come to us.” This stance comes from a care taking need to be near the animals but there’s a deeper anxiety they have towards the world outside of their bubble.
