By Micheál Masterson

Photographing architecture is not merely documenting a building. Nikola Olic’s striking photographs capture architecture in a fascinating perspective. The Serbian born photographer lives and works in Dallas, Texas. However, his work is not limited to the U.S., his series, Structure Photography includes architecture from cities around the globe such as Tokyo and Barcelona.

Through his lens, he accentuates intricate geometric patterns within vast structures, the cropped patterns of these buildings take on an element of abstraction. The buildings in Olic’s work are all purpose-built structures, however; his images allow the viewer to explore their distorting and dimensionless qualities. Olic states “abstract structural photography offers playful re-imagination of what urban structures might represent, both in a real physical sense and a personal experimental one.”

Having no formal training in the field of photography, Olic comes from an engineering background and mentions Edward Weston, Paul Strand, and Andre Kertesz as some of his photographic influences. Most recently, his work has been featured in the Origins in Geometry exhibition at the MADI museum in Dallas, Texas.
