Journey - Rare Prints and Vintage Collages by Danny Lyon
By Mamie Heldman
Through October 15th, the Edwynn Houk Gallery celebrates Danny Lyon in response to his retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In an effort to highlight the diverse spectrum of his work, the exhibit showcases rare and vintage photographs from his early career as a photographer to his more recent mixed media.
Known for the method of submerging himself in the lives of his subjects, Lyon is contributed for his style of documentary photography often called “New Journalism”. Not only does he facilitate honest intimacy with his subjects, Lyon’s work reveals his deep understanding of community and motive towards the human condition. This is evident in his dual documentation through photography and interviews of The Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club, first published in 1968. Between his constant humanitarian advocacy and avoidance of stereotypical American representation, the self-taught photographer, writer and filmmaker is important to the era of modern photojournalism.
The Edwynn Houk Gallery is located at 745 5th Avenue, 4th floor. The hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11-6pm.
