Jim Goldberg in Conversation with Lisa Sutcliffe: Coming and Going

Jim Goldberg will be in conversation with curator Lisa Sutcliffe of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate the publication of Coming and Going, a unique work of autobiography in which history, memory and imagination collide to reflect upon the bittersweet realities of individual life. The event will include a book signing.

Coming and Going is Jim Goldberg’s unique work of autobiography. Since 1999, Goldberg has been photographing his daily life through all its vicissitudes and returning to his studio to re-imagine and investigate these images through a practice of collage, annotation, montage, and reconstruction for which he has become renowned. This book charts a course through the grief following the death of one’s parents, the life-altering birth of a child, the heartbreak of divorce, and the rediscovery of love. Told using a correspondingly tumultuous blend of singular and combined imagery, personal notes, collages, and ephemera, the book captures the bittersweet realities of an individual life while reflecting on the universal, inescapable comings and goings that shape us and the ways we grow to understand ourselves.

Familiar from celebrated works such as Rich and Poor (1985), Raised by Wolves (1995) and Open See (2009), Goldberg’s visual language employs sequence and narrative with a feverish intensity. History, memory, and imagination collide in a vividly material practice to which the influences of fiction and film, and the book form itself, are central. Coming and Going offers a fierce, vulnerable, and at times overwhelming account of a life and a search for the elusive universals of experience – an achievement that constitutes Goldberg’s masterwork and a significant contribution to contemporary bookmaking.

Discussion: “So Easy to See”: Berenice Abbott’s Super Sight Photography | MIT Museum

In the early 1940s Berenice Abbott developed a method of direct image capture resulting in large photographic prints that are astonishing in their clarity, detail and transparency even today.

Abbott had aspirations that her process, which she called Super Sight, would be transformative in the photography of science. Today, her Super Sight prints are recognized as possibly the most successful realization of her career-long quest for photographic realism.

Join us for a roundtable discussion of Abbott’s Super Sight with participants Julia Van Haaften, retired founding curator of photography at the New York Public Library and Abbott’s biographer, and Professor Rowena Kennedy-Epstein of the University of Bristol, author of a study of the poet and science biographer Muriel Rukeyser, who collaborated with Abbott on Super Sight. The discussion will be moderated by MIT Museum’s Gary Van Zante, curator of the Museum’s exhibition on Abbott’s Super Sight currently on view in the Kurtz Gallery through March 2024.

Free Film NYC Kick-off

On Friday, November 3, 2023, Brooklyn-based arts nonprofit, WORTHLESSSTUDIOS, is celebrating the kick-off of the Harlem edition of Free FILM: NYC with their photographer in-residence Kevin Claiborne

Free Film is a nationwide, crowdsourced film photography project empowering photographers of all backgrounds to create work prompted by a theme provided by WORTHLESSSTUDIOS. The project democratizes how we document our communities by bringing a mobile darkroom and a converted Airstream trailer to a publicly accessible location within a specific neighborhood (in this case Harlem!) and distributing free rolls of 35mm film to the community.

The project was started by the organization five years ago by the WORTHLESSSTUDIOS team via a cross-country road trip across the United States and has since transformed into more locally-focused iterations in New York (previous projects have focused on Chinatown, The Lower East Side, The South Bronx, Sunset Park, Red Hook, etc.,), exploring our city borough by borough.

WORTHLESSSTUDIOS is now also collaborating with local community organizations to hold youth workshops, where students are learning how to use a film camera, focus a lens, and process and print film using professional equipment.

This November 2023, the project will head to Harlem, where the organization is teaming up with resident photographer Kevin Claiborne and partnering with the Brotherhood of Sister Sol Youth Centre. By the end of the project, the images taken will culminate in an exhibition and book to celebrate the diverse visions brought to life by this powerful project highlighting each neighborhood.

Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes Film Screening | SVA Theatre -Silas

Photographer George Platt Lynes is best known for his iconic portraits of early-to-mid 20th-century celebrities, but his greatest passion was his work exploring the male nude. Sensuous and radically explicit for their time, these photos have only recently begun to be fully appreciated for the revolution they represent — a man who captured his fantasies, and who created a window to a future his camera saw coming before anyone else.

From visionary art director Sam Shahid, HIDDEN MASTER features a stunning collection of photography from the 1930s through the1950s and gives moving dimension to the life of Lynes that is less known: his gifted eye for the male form, his long-term friendships with Gertrude Stein and Alfred Kinsey, and his lasting influence as one of the first openly gay American artists.

This film will be followed by a Q&A.

A Conversation with Nan Goldin + Jack Pierson | SVA Theatre

MFA Photography, Video and Related Media presents a conversation between acclaimed photographer Nan Goldin and conceptual artist Jack Pierson on the occasion of Pierson’s exhibition, “Pomegranates at Lisson Gallery.” The conversation will be orchestrated by faculty member Lyle Rexer.

Jack Pierson employs photography, collage, sculptural assemblage and installation in pursuit of love, longing, kinship, poetry, celebration, youth, fantasy and identity. The artist’s mode of non-hierarchical cultural compilation and a process of impulse-led editing allows Pierson to create personal and universal narratives across his multidisciplinary practice. Emerging from the 1980s milieu of the Boston School of documentarian photographers, Pierson was instead drawn into a world of gendered, punk-influenced performativity, and was greatly influenced by the more tactile work of his friend, Mark Morrisroe.

Emerging from the artist’s own life and relationships, and including herself as a subject, Nan Goldin’s work has transformed the role of photography in contemporary art. Her photographs and moving-image works address essential themes of identity, love, sexuality, addiction and mortality. Uniting art and activism, Goldin has confronted the HIV/AIDS epidemic since the 1980s and today brings international attention to the overdose crisis.

Fahey/Klein Gallery | Muses & Self: Photographs by Allen Ginsberg

“This exhibition of Ginsberg’s personal photographs balances our understanding of the public, outspoken poet and most prominent figure of the Beat Generation. At his core, Allen Ginsberg was a witness and chronicler of the world; his profound admiration for the beauty of the vernacular, intense observation, and celebration of the present moment guided his photography and poetry. The photographs included in this exhibition are joyful, often tender, sometimes profound while at other times humorous – and capture Ginsberg’s numerous meaningful relationships.

‘The poignancy of a photograph comes from looking back to a fleeting moment in a floating world.’

– Allen Ginsberg”

photo-eye Gallery | Kate Breakey: Wondrous Things

“Kate Breakey is an artist who finds inspiration in the beauty and complexity of nature. Her career has spanned over 40 years, during which she has created art that celebrates the wonder of the natural world. As a child growing up in coastal Australia, Kate was fascinated by the ocean, big skies and the wildlife that surrounded her. Frequent visits to the natural history museum further fueled her curiosity, as she marveled at the labeled and classified displays of birds and shells in glass cases. The diversity of life filled her with amazement and wonder.

”This exhibit showcases a collection of recent hand-colored photographs and contemporary orotones. The images capture the beauty of everyday objects, including still-lifes, dried flowers, insects, lizards, ravens, landscapes, fruits, vegetables and even the moon. Each piece is unique and incorporates handwork, blending photography and painting. The hand-colored images exhibit intricate detail, drawing the viewer in to appreciate every aspect, from petals to feathers. The framed orotones are stunning objects, radiating a warm hue even in dimly lit settings. The combination of glass, image and gold leaf creates a unique three-dimensional quality.”

Les Rencontre de la Photographie | Arles 2023: A State of Consciousness

  • The Rencontres d'Arles (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Strange as it may seem, every year, like a seismograph of our times, the Rencontres d’Arles capture our world’s state of consciousness. Its photographers, artists, and curators help us to see, to perceive, with keener acuteness, the transformations we are living through. Awareness– at the very least–of climate change has become unavoidable, directly affecting our habits.

Aware of these necessities and of its role as groundbreaker, this year the festival, in collaboration with the Cite Anthropocene in Lyon, is launching an exploration of the Arlesian territory and its ecosystem. Scientists, researchers, thinkers, and artists made their voyages of discovery in order to take stock of them. Ground Control, the former SNCF warehouse, was chosen as thinktank headquarters and was central to all discussions; the result was a rearrangement of the space.

Yossi Milo Gallery | CRUSADING THE SPECTER

Crusading The Specter is a creative response to a prevailing socio-political state of mourning and remembrance, an ever-increasing loss of societal liberties and privileges, and worldwide environmental devastation. This exhibition delves into the spatial dimension and politics of the notion of 'a haunting,' drawing inspiration from the concept of Hauntology as introduced by French philosopher Jacques Derrida in his 1992 magnum opus, 'Specters of Marx.'

Hauntology emphasizes that the past is not merely a relic of bygone eras but rather an ever-present haunting force that profoundly impacts our lives. The artists featured in Crusading The Specter embark on uncovering and following traces of the past that shape our contemporary experiences and identities. Through their artistic endeavors, these artists communicate processes of grieving, yearning, recovery, and temporality, shedding light on the intricate interplay between history, memory, and the human condition.
