Packed! The crowd spilling onto the sidewalk in front of Mike Weiss Gallery was a testament to the talent inside. At the entrance, a photorealistic painting hung without a glass frame, revealing the subtle texture of oil paint. Without this piece, a casual observer might wander the whole gallery having no idea they hadn't just viewed a photography exhibit. And no doubt, some did just that. For beyond just the obvious technical skill was a cohesive theme of female strength, beauty, and solitude — more than enough to create a powerful photo.
The impossibly tight crowd was, perhaps, also a testament to something else: a longing for skill over style and the need, once in a while, to be amazed.
