A Syrian family weeps tears of joy after reaching, on a rubber boat from Turkey, the village of Skala Sykaminias  located on the northeastern Greek island of Lesbos, on October 10, 2015. Thousand of refugees, mostly coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, cross everyday the Aegean sea from Turkey to reach Europe: a relatively short but extremely perilous journey. According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 850 000 arrivals by sea were registered in Greece in 2015.

Fabio Bucciarelli has spent five years documenting the causes and consequences of the largest refugee migration since World War II. In The Dream, Bucciarelli tells the stories of those who have fled the wars in Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and beyond. His photographs reveal the refugees’ humanity and shows the strength of people who are sustained by a dream to be free of war, to find safety, to recover their dignity and to once again build meaningful lives.

Refugees and migrants reach the coast of the tiny Greek island of Lesbos on October 11, 2015 after crossing the Aegean Sea from Turkey. According to the island's Ministry of Interior, nearly 30.000 people landed here during the first week of October alone. Most of the new arrivals are from Syria, with large contingents from Afghanistan and Iraq.
