Creative Time's Annual Spring Gala honoring artist Vik Muniz

Creative Time, the nation's leading presenter of public art, honored Vik Muniz at its 2015 Spring Gala on Monday 11th of May. The event was attended by some 650 high-profile guests including artists, writers, filmmakers, fashion designers, philanthropists, and businesspeople. Calvin Klein Collection Women's Creative Director Francisco Costa gave remarks from a soaring stone pulpit paying homage to Vik Muniz, his longtime friend and fellow Brazilian. Guests enjoyed a regal Brazilian-inspired menu of sumptuous, tropic-infused fare designed by Muniz's close friend, chef Daniel Boulud, dramatically set in candlelit rows.

At this year's Gala, one of the season's hottest and most anticipated events in New York, guests had the amazing and rare opportunity to dine under the soaring arches of iconic sanctuary The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the world's largest Gothic Revival cathedral.

The evening began with hors d'oeuvres and caipirinhas made with Ypioca cachaça, sipped to tropical beats b Gaspar Muniz, Dj son of Vik Muniz, before a dramatic altar candle wall spelling out "Creative time" in bold, flickering letters. Dinner in the nave was cued by the thundering strains of the cathedral's 8,500-pipe organ. Guests broke bread, devoured Boulud's special moqueca, and sipped Ruffino wine from goblets. An indulgent chocolate-and-candied-orange dessert came just before "shout" brass brand McCollough Sons of Thunder marched up the aisles, kicking off a joyful dance party with "When the Saints Come Marching In. "

A limited-edition traiditional seven-day candle specially designed by Muniz was sold-on site, with proceeds going directly to Creative Time. this luxurious memento, scented with notes of resin and bergamot and developed by Gathery and Identity Atelier, features the saintly image of Vik Muniz's Nossa Senhora Das Graças (Pictures of Junk), 2008. The candle can be purchased for $125.

The night's festivities also featured a spirited paddle raise led by Henri Highley, Specialist & Head of Day Sale, Contemporary Art, PHILLIPS auction house to benefit Creative Time and Escola Vidigal, a free arts and technology program for children in the Rio de Janeiro favela of Vidigal founded by Vik Muniz. Paddle raise supporters of $10,000 or more received a limited-edition print of Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, after Bernini from Vik Muniz's Pictures of Chocolate series, created by Muniz exclusively for this year's Gala.
