Carmen Molina: Undercurrents at Artion Gallery
Carmen Molina: UndercurrentsArtion Gallery – December 6th, 2012
It was like an invitation into a personal home. Artion's new space in the South Street Seaport opened with Columbian artist Carmen Molina's Undercurrents ̶ — intimate art shown in an intimate atmosphere.
Molina created 'Undercurrents' in response to a dark period in her past, and the work draws from moments of acceptance, surrender and release in her life. The show features the artist’s unique technique which she refers to a “photo layering." Colors, light, shapes, and textures are blended from multiple photos, creating reality out of the unreal.
Inside the new Water Street gallery, candles hung from the ceiling and sat flickering in nooks of exposed brick. Magic and darkness belonged to the same space, flirting and inviting us into Molina's world.
"I make my images the way some musicians create their songs," Molina said. "I just sit with my emotions and let them flow as they search for melody and harmony."
Undercurrents runs through December 31. Ten per cent of proceeds from all sales will be donated to Caring For Colombia.
