Bill Armstrong Film Noir at ClampArt
February 21st - April 6th
A cramped but cheerful crowd greeted me as I walked into ClampArt to view Bill Armstrong's series' Film Noir. The crowd, like typical New Yorkers in the winter were dressed in mostly muted, dark tones but the photographs on the wall brought the place to life with color. The images revisit the themes of classic black and white films of the 1940s and 1950s that came to be known as film noir. The solitary figures in the images channel the classic scenes except that they are in vibrant yet blurred color.
Armstrong made this series from appropriated images taken from advertising, stock material and other sources which he then collaged and re-photographed. This is Armstrong's fourth exhibition at the gallery.
