A Portrait of America
Joy Wai Gallery – November 26th, 2012
What did the world look like immediately following President Obama’s 2008 inauguration? A Portrait of America aims to shed light on the hopes of a nation, and how one country’s vote affected the rest of the world.
The eclectic mix of international voices includes photographers, painters, and sculptors, all sharing their perspective in this group exhibition on display at the Joy Wai Gallery through December 31. Wai first conceived of the exhibition when she became a US citizen in 2008.
Four years in the making, the collaborative effort features 45 works by 19 artists, and was curated by LA-based conceptual artist Ramses Granados, who also has a piece in the exhibit.
The diverse selection of works speak to the American experience with a mix of adoration, critical analysis, and humor. A Portrait of America offers a window into the recent past, a time when hope bettered our fears.
