Emerging Artist Interviews: Ann Lai

1. Tell us about your image: This series of photographs is dispalying scenes of my dreams.

This photo refers to one specific dream: it was the first time, I arrived in France, in Europe, I wasn't able to speak in French at that time. I was seating around a table with, all around me, French people continuously talked. A lot compared with my culture. All this atmosphere took place in this colourful scenery. Until now, I can recall all this peaceful harmony without having any sound emerging.

2. What type of Fantasy were you trying to express or capture in this photograph?

All my dreams are usually persistent in my head for days to come. Therefore, I have an enhanced need to get these images out of my head, I'm doing it through photographing.

3. Why Photography? What about it inspires and excites you?

The first time I had my class photo, I was like "oh great, I don't even need to paint or to draw".

I always have a lot of images in my head but I am really bad at drawing anything so that photographing is my way out: I express my imagination through my photogaphs just like a painter is doing it through his brushes. It's like doing a puzzle!

I also studied about Visual Communication Design.

4. Our upcoming issue is centered around the theme of 'Temptation'. What's your biggest temptation?

There is something puzzling when I travel with my camera. I love shooting trees, I think they are beautiful and somehow I can feel they have got a soul. So, I, am just shooting them continuously. That is my temptation from the outside.
